ただ、自動詞と他動詞の違いについて、相変わらずウンウン言ってます。
参考になる文をまた探してきたので、今度こそ見分ける感覚を覚えたい。

他動詞は、うしろに目的語（名詞）を必要とし、その目的語に働きかけて何らかの影響や変化を及ぼす動詞、ということになります。

They gave $25 to the memorial fund.
I've just been visiting a friend of mine.

自動詞は主語と動詞のみで文がなりたち、目的語を必要としません。
目的語がないので、他動詞のように影響を及ぼす対象がなく、単なる動作を示すことになります。

She smiled and said, "Good morning."
I knocked and knocked but nobody answered.

また、自動詞では、前置詞を使うことによって、動作の対象をつけ加えることができます。
She turned to look at me.

自動詞・他動詞の違いは「目的語」をとるか・とらないか、ということで、その基準はとてもシンプルです。
ただ、結局のところ、自動詞・他動詞の両方で使われる動詞はたくさんあり、すべての動詞について自動詞・他動詞に分類して丸暗記しようとするのはナンセンス・・・です。

重要なのは、その動詞がもつ本来の意味を理解して、主語自身がとる動作なのか（自動詞）、他（目的語）を巻き込み作用を及ぼす動作なのか（他動詞）を判断し、文脈の中で理解することです。

自動詞は、主語自身がとる単なる動作。
他動詞は、目的語に何らかの影響を与える動作。
というイメージなのよね。

Rule 018
状態動詞は通例進行形を作れない。

一般に状態を表す動詞：be, contain, consist of A, belong to A, remain
心理状態を表す動詞：believe, forget, hate, hope, like, remember
知覚に関する動詞：feel, hear, see, smell, taste

The committee consists of twenty members.
You belong to me.

他動詞と間違いやすい自動詞
agree to A, apologize to A, complain to A, hope for A, listen to A, object to A

I quite agree. 
I agreed to the proposal. 
I must apologize.
He apologized to us for arriving late. 
Some people are always complaining.
I complained to the police about my neighbor's dog.
We are still hoping. 
I'm hoping for a good crop this year.
Listen! What's that noise? 
We listened to his band playing. 
If you ask him, he won't object.
I object to waiting another year.

Answer the telephone.
We approached the city.
He attends the meeting.
He entered the room.
I didn't reach the office in time today.
