Rule 114
動名詞は「過去に起きたこと、一般的・具体的・習慣的なこと」を表す。
「過去に起きたこと」を表す場合、動名詞はto不定詞に置き換えることはできない。
「一般的・具体的なこと」を表す用法では、両者の違いは明確ではない。
動名詞は、「過去に起きたことや、現在起きていること」を前提にして使うのに対し、to不定詞は「これから起きること」を仮定して使う。

Rule 117
文の主語や補語、動詞の目的語になっている動名詞は、to不定詞に置き換えることができる場合がある。
to不定詞は前置詞の目的語になれない。
I'm interested in seeing(x to see) the movie.
動名詞は、to不定詞のように形容詞的用法や副詞的用法がない。

Rule 119
動名詞は前置詞の目的語になれる。
I have a strong objection to being treated like this.
objection to ~に対する反対、異議、異論

このtoの後に動名詞が来るのがすごく違和感があって、え?to不定詞なの?動名詞?どっちなの??と思ってた。
前置詞の目的語かどうかで判断すればいいのかな。

Rule 121
to不定詞だけを目的語に取る動詞は、「これから~する」という意志を表すものが多い。

She decided to quit her job and start her own business.
I desire to travel around the world someday.
I expect to finish this project by the end of the week.
He failed to pass the exam even though he studied hard.
I hope to visit Japan someday.
My grandmother learned to cook traditional dishes from her mother and passed down those recipes to me.
Despite the difficult situation, he managed to finish the project on time.
We meant to finish the project by Friday, but it took longer than expected.
She offered to give me a ride home.
She pretended to be a cat, but she wasn't really behaving like a cat.
She promised to come to the party with me.
I asked him to help me with the project, but he refused to do it.
The company is seeking to expand its operations into new markets.
She wishes to become a doctor in the future.

動名詞だけを目的語に取る動詞は、「過去に起きたことを~する」「一般的・具体的・習慣的なことを~する」を表すものが多い。

He admitted stealing the money.
She avoids eating junk food because it's not good for her health.
The company is considering opening a new office in Asia.
He denied doing anything to do with the crime.
I enjoy listening to music while I work.
The hiker escaped being attacked by the bear by playing dead.
I finished doing my homework just in time for dinner.
He gave up trying to convince his parents to let him travel alone and decided to wait until he was older.
He couldn't imagine leaving his hometown and moving to a big city.
I don't mind waiting for a few minutes.
To become a skilled dancer, you must practice performing in front of an audience.
We should quit arguing and find a solution to this problem.
We should postpone doing the outdoor activities until the weather gets better.
She recommended studying abroad to gain more experience.
