形容詞の叙述用法ってあるんだけど、どういう意味なのか説明がない。
なのでBardに聞いてみたけれど...ChatGPTと同じく迷走し始めた。
こういう場合は、今まで通り人に聞くしかない。
This is a big carrot.（これは大きいニンジンだ）
This carrot is big.（このニンジンは大きい）
詳しくは後述していますが、これらは限定用法と叙述用法と呼ばれる2種類で、英語の形容詞を使うときは必ずどちらかの用法になっているのです。
要は、名詞を修飾する限定用法か、動詞の補語になる叙述用法ということね。
大きな犬が猫を追いかけた。（限定用法）
The big dog chased the cat.
犬は大きかった。（叙述用法）
The dog was big.
私はテイラー・スウィフトの新曲の知らせに興奮した。
I was excited to hear the news of Taylor Swift's new song.
彼女の新曲はとても素晴らしく興奮した。
Her new song was so great and exciting.
彼はとても疲れていたので、ベッドに横になってすぐに眠りに落ちた。
He was so tired that he lay down on his bed and fell asleep right away.
私が家に帰った時、彼は暗がりに一人でいた。
When I got home, he was alone in the dark.
私は多額の入院費用を用意しなくてはならない。
I have to prepare a large amount of hospital expenses.
私はTwitterを見るのに多くの時間を使いすぎた。
